Artist Statement for Seattle Public Arts.doc
Architecture has always been in the background of my work in photography and paintings. Whether it’s abstraction or the figurative work, I try to find the structure that underlay a composition or a body. The emphasis on light in architecture made me aware of photography as a tool to capture the expressive light and colors. I am always trying to pursue the elusive feeling and mood of experiences and structure it in a way that evokes an emotion in the viewer.
These paintings in the Temple Series serve as a blueprint for my idea of the temple. I had read two short stories that paralleled each other: ‘The Circular Ruin’ by Jorges Luis Borges and ‘The Circular Valley’ by Paul Bowls. Both are about the abandon place of worship. I like the relationship between the sacred and the profane. Even in ruins, the place still had the power to mesmerize me. I was lucky enough to have visited a few of these places in Poznan, Poland.
The Gates Series commemorate a series of markers along a mythical and metaphoric journey. It is a memory of travels, physical or metaphysical. These Gates are guides, beacon into an imaginary landscape of lush feelings and thoughts.
